Week Three

The Field Test

A realistic mid-market client scenario. Five days. You deliver a full discovery, audit, and proposal package and defend it live to the cohort. Certification is awarded only to students whose work meets the standard. Some won't pass. That's what makes the credential worth carrying.

The Standard is for people already doing — or ready to do — real work in the mid-market. We filter hard on application because twelve is the largest cohort where every student gets real feedback from the instructor.

The application is not a formality. We're looking for people who can demonstrate context: consulting work you've done, businesses you've operated in, technical projects you've shipped. Whatever your background, show us you're close enough to the work that the tenets make sense to you.

If you're admitted, you'll be one of twelve. You'll be expected to show up every session, complete every deliverable, and defend your field test. Roughly fifteen to twenty percent of applicants to any serious practitioner program don't finish. That's the nature of a real standard.

In exchange, you join a small, defensible cohort of certified practitioners with a public credential, a verified listing, and access to every cohort's accumulated playbooks and case studies. The credential appreciates as the program grows.

These are the beliefs that separate a practicing Fractional CAIO from everyone else claiming the title. The curriculum is built around them. The field test measures against them. Every certified graduate is accountable to them.

The business comes first. The technology comes last.

A CAIO who starts with the tech has already failed. You learn the business — how it makes money, where it leaks, who does what — before you ever open a model. The AI is the tool, not the job.

If the owner can't run it after you leave, you failed.

A real engagement ends with the client more capable than when you arrived, not more dependent. Every system you build should outlive your involvement. If your value depends on the client not understanding what you did, you're not a CAIO — you're a hostage-taker.

Simplicity is the deliverable.

The best AI implementation is one a non-technical employee can maintain on a Tuesday morning without calling you. Complexity is a sign of a consultant protecting their retainer, not a sign of sophistication.

Proof of work beats thought leadership.

One case study you can walk a prospect through beats a hundred LinkedIn posts. Build, deploy, document, repeat. The field is overrun with people talking about AI. Be the one who ships.

You serve the business, not the vendor.

A CAIO has no loyalty to any platform, model, or tool. The moment you're evangelizing a specific product instead of solving a specific problem, you've stopped being a fiduciary and started being a reseller.

Every project is a teaching opportunity. The owner and the leadership team should finish the engagement understanding not just what was built, but why — enough to make good AI decisions without you in the room.

A clever prompt is not a strategy. A one-off automation is not a deliverable. The job is to build systems that survive employee turnover, tool deprecation, and the owner's worst day.

Data handling, model selection, employee impact, customer disclosure — these aren't afterthoughts, they're core to the work. A CAIO who doesn't think carefully about what happens to the people inside the business as AI rolls in isn't a CAIO. They're a technician with a fancy title.

A CAIO doesn't hand over a forty-page strategy deck and disappear. You sit in the business, understand the rhythms, and stay close enough to adjust when reality doesn't match the plan. Fractional means part-time. It does not mean distant.

The only way the Fractional CAIO role becomes the industry standard is if the people doing it well teach the people doing it poorly. Hoarding playbooks protects nobody. If you're good at this work, your obligation is to make the field better by documenting what works.

I started The CAIO Standard because, truthfully— there wasn't one. This industry is developing by the day with "consultants" everywhere, but zero industry standard. So we are developing it. This does two things:

1. It provides businesses with the highest quality CAIO out there

2. It funnels businesses to where the best practitioners are— graduates of The CAIO Standard.

Before founding The CAIO Standard, I spent years in law enforcement. That background matters here for exactly one reason: I'm able to explain things simply and I'm comfortable with uncomfortable conversations. The owners I work with don't want a pitch deck. They want someone who will sit inside the business, figure out what's actually broken, and fix it with AI when AI is the right tool — and tell them the truth when it isn't.

The Standard is my attempt to do for the Fractional CAIO role what others did for "growth" and "product management" a decade ago: write down what good looks like, share it openly, and let the field organize itself around a standard worth defending.
